About Us
St Joseph House is a work-oriented program certified by the International Center for Clubhouse Development www.iccd.org, and is designed to help people with mental illness re-enter society.
In a nutshell, traditional therapy and medication for mental illness are essential in treating this class of diseases. A third component has a long name but a simple concept. In psychosocial rehabilitation, a work-oriented program provides opportunities for empowerment in a safe environment. It deals with the healthy part of the individual.
People are encouraged to participate in a variety of work activities from which they can regain self-esteem and take on increasing amounts of responsibility, without fear of the usual consequences that accompany unsuccessful efforts. Members and staff work together as colleagues to find talents and skills and match them with the work of the clubhouse. The work here is meaningful, and is designed to make the clubhouse a desirable place to come and to return. Some examples of the work-ordered day can be found in the kitchen (prep, cooking, inventory); garden (planning, planting, harvesting); admissions (orientation, hospitality, outreach); business (attendance records, newsletter reporting/editing) and house maintenance (cleaning, organizing, minor repairs).
The clubhouse helps find entry-level jobs through established relationships with employers in the Houston area. St Joseph House helps members find independent housing. We also offer to help in reaching educational goals, advocacy needs and social security benefits. If the person is a resident of Magnificat Houses, our sponsor, they also receive medication management.
Thereis no cost for the program.
